Last Friday, two Restaurant Traffic chicks decided that it was finally time to check out the new Chicken Salad Chick, located a mere block away from our office in the Carmel Commons shopping center. Sandwiched between a handful of well-known establishments such as Fresh Market and Honey Baked Ham, it almost goes unnoticed. However, if you look closer, you can see a handful of cute little outdoor table tops beneath an inviting covered awning, making it an ideal spot for an alfresco lunch break.

Walking inside, we were immediately impressed with a very lovely staff, and a cozy, boutique-style décor. Pretty green and white stripes, pretend windows, and cozy booths covered with floral print table cloths make you feel like you’re home sitting in mom’s kitchen waiting for the finishing touches on your favorite meal.

Chicken Salad Chick is a perfectly situated South Charlotte option for grabbing a quick, healthy, and refreshing bite on a busy day. Although the meals are walk up and order, the overall experience is the same as what you would expect from any other sit-down deli or restaurant. And for those of you with even busier schedules, they also offer a wide variety of freshly packaged Quick Chick salads located at the register for you to grab and go.

We didn’t order anything fancy, each ordering the Original Chick which includes a choice of any sandwich and one side item, pickle, and cookie of the day, but we were definitely impressed when our meals were delivered to our table. The portions of each meal were extremely large, the perfect size for any big, mid-day appetite, and the price was one of the best we’ve seen in a long time.

The younger of us RT chicks opted for the Cranberry Kelli chicken salad, which is a mixture of dried, sweetened cranberries and slivered almonds. Her side, the tri-colored rotini pasta tossed with an Italian dressing, feta and parmesan cheeses, black olives and artichoke hearts. While the cranberry chicken salad was delicious with just the right amount of sweetness, the pasta salad was equally as good and was the first item on the plate to be finished.

The more distinguished (older or whatever) RT chick also chose the Original Chick but, instead of going sweet, chose “their most offensive flavor”, the Dixie Chick chicken salad, which is prepared with lots of onion, lettuce and tomato, all of which paired on the sandwich deliciously.

After eating every last bite of our meals, we couldn’t help but treat ourselves to a few extra side items on the menu, which were some of the largest we’ve seen this side of Tennessee. The broccoli salad was fresh, something a little different from the norm, and would perfectly complement any of their famous chicken salads. Lastly, their grape salad was just as delicious, but a bit more on the sweet side (we were told this is more of a dessert than a side). At first bite, we were not sure what to think but quickly found ourselves digging in for more. It reminded us of some of our families old recipes… special dishes that were only prepared during the holidays or on special occasions.

Fortunately there’s no special occasion required to take advantage of the Chicken Salad Chick’s palate-pleasing fare. If you’re able to stop in, make sure to bring your appetite, and tell them the chicks from Restaurant Traffic sent you!
